Being a good writer and blogger isn't easy. With so much good content out there, readers expect a high degree of polish and engagement. Here is some of our best advice on what to avoid and how to do things ‘write’ ;)

1. Not being genuine. - Write from the heart or from a place of real knowledge. The internet is full of pseudo experts and people writing only for the purpose of SEO. If you write about someting you're passionate about it'll show and reflect in your readership.

2. Writing without an audience in mind. Whenever I begin to write I imagine the people I am writing for. Doing this reminds me of what's important to them and keeps me from sounding like a text book or wikipedia entry.

3. Starting off weak. Take your time crafting a good intro and subject for your post. You may have written the best content in the world but you need to attract a readers attention in the first two lines or risk losing them. Think about this the next time you are cruising the web yourself.

4. Making all your posts a 'top 10 list of something'. We've all realized that subjects like the "Top 10 Writing Tips of All Time" or "The 15 Worst Celebrity Hairdo's" attract reader's attention but it's become REALLY over used. These subjects are meant to attract low value casual readers, don't use this if you want to cultivate a loyal readership.

5. Writing sporadically with long periods between posts. If a reader likes your blog they'll come back and visit it for new content regularly. If they don't find any, eventually their interest will wane and they'll go somewhere else. There's a bit of an unwritten contract that gets created with readers, they like to see something new about once a week, so give it to them.

6. T.M.I. Too much information can make people uncomfortable and hurt you. When your blog goes from "informative with a personal touch" to "ranting with your whole life on display" you may want to ask yourself why you are writing in the first place.
